If you follow my blog, you’ve probably noticed I’ve had a blast making all sorts of fun recipes using egg rolls and wonton wrappers like this Mozzarella Meatball Egg Rolls recipe. You can put so many different things inside an egg roll wrapper! The possibilities are endless, they taste great and they are so easy to make. It’s something both the kids and adults can agree on and it’s not difficult to make, which is a score.

To make the meatball egg rolls I used the new RAGÚ® Homestyle Meat Pasta Sauce, which is amazing! I not only used it to cook my meatballs but warmed a little up for dipping!

Mozzarella Meatball Egg Rolls Recipe

To make this Mozzarella & Meatball Egg Roll Wrap recipe you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • RAGÚ Homestyle Meat Pasta Sauce 23 oz
  • 1 Package Egg Roll Wrappers
  • 24 Meatballs
  • 1/2 – 1 cup Mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup Black Olives
  • 1 cup Water
  • 6 or more String Cheese

Follow these directions to make these yummy meatball egg rolls:

  • Place about 24 meatballs into a crock pot. For this recipe, I just purchased frozen meatballs, but you can make your own. However, if you buy the frozen meatballs, it’s totally okay to toss them into the crockpot still frozen.
  • Add one jar of RAGÚ Homestyle Meat Pasta Sauce, mushrooms, black olives and 1 cup of water. Allow to cook on high for about 30 minutes or until water is boiled out.

  • Fold one corner toward the center of the egg roll wrapper. Using your finger wet the other corner with a little bit of water and move it toward the center. It should come over the other side of the egg roll wrapper, and the water will help seal it.
  • Roll the bottom side of the egg roll wrapper up as tight as you can, wet the top of the wrapper and continue to roll the wrapper up. Check and make sure the wrapper is sealed everywhere. If it does not, just use a little water and make sure it’s sealed.
  • Place meatball egg rolls into hot grease and cook on each side for 20 to 30 seconds or until golden brown. Be sure not to leave them in long, they cook super quick.
  • Set mozzarellameatball wraps on the plate with paper towels on top to soak up additional grease.

Serve with RAGÚ Homestyle Meat Pasta Sauce or choose one of the other flavors of RAGÚ Homestyle Saucefor dipping.

You can grabRAGÚ Homestyle Pasta Sauce in four awesome flavors:

  • RAGÚ Homestyle Traditional Pasta Sauce 23 oz.
  • RAGÚ Homestyle Cheese Pasta Sauce 23 oz.

Did you know that RAGÚ Homestyle Thick & Hearty Traditional Sauce uses peeled, chopped, and simmered ingredients to create a delicious robust texture?

RAGÚ really knocked it out of the park with their Homestyle Thick & Hearty Traditional Sauce! You can definitely tell they do something different. Okay, so a lot of things different, like using farm grown ingredients, fragrant herbs such as basil, garlic, ground black pepper, and fennel, and of course using vine ripened tomatoes. It’s so much more than just a pasta sauce.

Avoid Excess Moisture in the filling

Any extra water will result in your Egg Rolls being soggy and dark spots forming on your Egg Roll wrappers.

What's the difference between egg roll and spring roll recipe? ›

As far as the difference in fillings, egg rolls are typically filled with cooked cabbage, some other vegetables, and pork, while spring rolls typically contain only cooked vegetables. But like any generalization for food so beloved worldwide, you're sure to find exceptions if you look hard enough.

What part of the egg do you use for meatballs? ›

I've been making meatballs and meat loaf with whole eggs my entire cooking life. In fact, I've never heard of using just yolks. But there will probably be very little discernible difference in meatballs with yolks only.

How do you keep meatball subs from getting soggy? ›

Finally, toast the rolls to prevent them from getting too soggy with sauce. Of course, some crispy-gone-soggy bites are welcome, just as the cheese pulls, sauce drips and messy fingers are, too.

What's the best store bought sauce for meatball subs? ›

Marinara- Our favorite jarred sauce is hands down Rao's. Nothing compares in my opinion. We usually buy the giant jars from Costco anyway, but of course any marinara you like will work. Provolone cheese- You could use provolone or fresh mozzarella here.

Why aren't my egg rolls crispy? ›

Do not add any sesame oil, soy sauce, or vegetable oil to your egg rolls before cooking them. This may feel counterintuitive, but egg roll wrappers have plenty of oil built into them to begin with and adding more can lead to soggy egg rolls. Tip: This can also be relevant for homemade egg rolls.

Why won t my egg rolls stay crispy? ›

If your oil is too hot, then the egg rolls wrappers will brown quickly, but won't be as crispy because there wasn't enough time for the water to evaporate. If the oil is too cold, the egg rolls will never reach peak crispiness. You can still fry without a thermometer, but it may be more trial and error.

Can I use spring roll wrappers instead of egg roll? ›

You can use spring roll or egg roll wrappers here, though spring rolls will create a more delicate, crispy crunch than the egg rolls' thicker exteriors.

Are egg rolls Chinese or Japanese? ›

Foodtimeline.org says, “egg rolls (and their lighter counterpart, spring rolls) date back to ancient China. It is quite likely that egg-roll type foods were made and consumed in the USA by the first Chinese settlers in the mid 1800's.” Okay, now we are getting somewhere.

What are Chinese egg rolls made of? ›

The egg roll is a variety of deep-fried appetizer served in American Chinese restaurants. It is a cylindrical, savory roll with shredded cabbage, chopped meat, or other fillings inside a thickly-wrapped wheat flour skin, which is fried in hot oil.

What is the best binder for meatballs? ›

An egg is usually a good start, as that can help with the tenderness and texture, but the king of meatball binders is breadcrumbs soaked in milk (also known as a panade). Soaking the breadcrumbs first makes them pliable and soggy, which allows them to easily and evenly mix into the ground meat.

Why do my meatballs fall apart when I cook them? ›

Because meat shrinks when cooked, mince proteins are likely to separate and crumble unless bound together. Whether it's breadcrumbs or egg (or both), or simply salt, binding the mince is a crucial step in maintaining the softness of your meatballs while preventing them from falling apart.

What goes best on a meatball sub? ›

Aside from meatballs, marinara sauce, and cheese, cooked bell peppers and onions are a delicious addition to meatball subs. To add them to your sub, thinly slice the onions and peppers and cook them in a little olive oil with salt and pepper over medium heat until they are tender-crisp.

What toppings go best on meatball sub? ›

Cheese: You can use your favorite cheese or use a mix of cheeses. Sharp cheddar, Gouda, Fontina, Monterey Jack, Gruyere, Pepper Jack, and brie are all good options. The amount of cheese you use will depend on the size of your bread. I love sharp Cheddar, Monterey Jack, and Gouda together.
