What to Consider
Material
Finding the absolute right waterproof shoe for you starts with the material. In general, rubber is one of the most popular constructions for waterproof shoes since it keeps moisture out, and is also extremely easy to clean. While brands like Hunter's famed rain boots feature all-rubber designs, dressier shoes feature a rubber outsole, since it also gives an ample amount of grip to keep you from slipping on puddles. Leather is also a reliable material, which is mostly found in our picks' uppers. All the leather shoes in this shopping list have a fully-seamed construction, which prevents water from seeping in. Gore-tex is a synthetic fabric blend that does a bang-up job of keeping water at way, which is why it's a go-to pick for trail shoes and sneakers. Another great material is PVC, a plastic polymer that's commonly found in shower liners because it's (you guessed it) great and blocking water.
How We Selected
Vanessa Powell is a stylist and fashion writer with more than a decade of market experience testing women's essentials including waterproof shoes. For this story, she combed through her year's worth of testing to find the absolute best boots, shoes, and sneakers. She considered their waterproofing ability, outsole grip, and just how great they looked. She also consulted with Women's Health editors on their go-to picks. Powell regularly wears most of the shoes on this list.
Pros
- Pull tabs make it easy to slip on
- Material is resistant to all sorts of elements
Cons
- They run big (size down)
Hunter is a household name when it comes to rain gear, and the brand's cult-favorite boots have become a closet staple. This above-the-ankle Play boot is cute and cheeky while remaining 100% waterproof, roomy, and comfortable. Unlike other tall rain boots, this is easy to pull and off thanks to a stylish pull tab. We found it to run slightly big, so size down if you don't want them too roomy. In fact, Deputy Commerce Editor Christian Gollayan turns to this boot when it's raining or snowing. "It really does hold up to mud, slush, puddles, and it's super easy to clean after a long walk in the park with the dogs," he says. "Because it's easier to slip on and off than other snow boots I have, I turn to this one more often."

Pros
- Great arch support
- Great for cold weather
Cons
- Not the easiest to take on/off
- Requires a break in
This winter shoe from Eddie Bauer is just as durable and waterproof as our favorite Duck Boots, but is much sleeker with its all-black aesthetic. We love its seam-sealed construction that keeps rain, puddles, and snow at bay. Our editors who wear this say it's great in cold weather climates, chilly wet days, or even on a boat. More importantly, this comes with ample arch support and a cushioned foot bed, so you can log miles it with less foot pain. Though take note: Unlike our favorite rain boot, this one is a lace-up, and takes more effort to put on off. Plus, I found that the fit is snug, which keeps my foot secure during long walks, but it does require a break-in period.

Free People's Half Time Slide is an easy, breezy pair of shoes with a visible thick tread that is equal parts stylish and grippy. The most popular use for it: gym showers, dog walks, mail runs, pool days, and hot yoga outings. We also like that unlike other cushioned slides we've tested, this one has tons of arch support, making it ideal for people with high arches. In fact, WH Executive Fashion Director Kristen Saladino highly recommends this slide for your next summer trip. "It's perfect poolside or on your beach vacation," she says. "I love the pops of color, and it is super comfortable."

Pros
- Fruit scented
- Great for wide calves
Cons
- Might run too big for some people
If you've ever owned a pair of Melissa shoes (2000s teenagers, we're looking at you), you know about their fruity bubblegum scent. It's noticeable, but not over the top. Melissa's take on Wellies is just as delicious as the glitter jelly sandals the brand is known for. From the shine to the scent, we found that it's easy on the eyes and our noses. "I love this boot," says Rose Lauture, WH's Assistant Fashion Editor, "I have a pair in black. It's very comfortable and keeps my feet dry on rainy days."

Pros
- Huge variety of colors and prints
- Infused with scented oil
Cons
- Buckle is not customizeable
Our editors who own a Freedom Moses slide are obsessed. It hits everything we need in a pair of slides, and is available in a bunch of different styles and prints to match whatever beachside look you're going for. Said necessities include: great arch support, an anti-slip outsole, a curved footbed that's extremely cozy, and a lightweight build that packs easily into luggage or your gym bag. Bonus: it's infused with a scented oil that smells divine out of the box, though this fragrance fades over time. "This slide is so ideal for summertime, or as slippers at home" says Isabelle McMahon, WH's Assistant Social Media Editor. "Plus, it comes in the cutest prints ever! I even bought a pair for my mom, who uses it every time she gardens outside."

Pros
- Stylish
- Incredibly comfortable
Cons
- Some people don't like the added platform height
- Laces are not waterproof
I've worn this bright chunky boot to work and have received tons of compliments. While some women may not like the thick sole, I think it adds a lot of style points while providing tons of cushion that was super comfortable to stand all day in. The sole is also super grippy, and has saved me from slipping on sidewalks during my rainy day commutes. I also like that it comes in a variety of colors and finishes, so you can blend whatever style you choose into your everyday wardrobe. I prefer the brighter models, since they add pops of color to my fits.
The only drawback with it: though the patent leather shell is entirely waterproof, its laces are not, and I've found that they're incredibly soaked after I've used them in the snow.

Pros
- Cozy knit material
- Water-repellent
Cons
- Some testers say they fit too snug, so you may want to size up
Vivaia is one of my favorite shoe brands since it makes dressy shoes that are as comfortable as they are stylish. I was shocked to find out that it also makes a water-resistant dress boot, and after testing it during a rainy day in Los Angeles, I can confirm that it kept my feet from getting soaked.
It houses a bunch of functional features like a proprietary knit lining that feels like I'm wearing house socks. It also has a leather-blend shell that's able to withstand rain and puddles. If you're someone who need extra support, you'll like the cushioned footbed, which has incredible arch support and a shock-absorbing pad that's easier on your joints than your typical pair of heels. The kicker? This boot is stylish as heck, thanks to its square-toe silhouette and flared heel.

If you're an avid WH reader, you already know how much we love Hoka's Clifton 9 running sneakers. Now, the brand updates its marque model with a Gore-tex shell and a grippy sole for its first waterproof road running shoe. I found this great for my rainy day jogs, or if I'm walking across slippery surfaces. That's because it's incredibly durable, and features its famed cushioning that feels like you're walking on Cloud Nine.

Cougar Sayah Waterproof Sneakers
Pros
- Looks great with most business casual looks

Cons

Editors rave about how incredibly comfortable Cougar's Sayah Waterproof sneaker is that its waterproof technology becomes an afterthought. The cloud-like cushioning and chunky stylish design might steal the show, but this sneaker was made to be worn through rainy days, slush, and puddles. The waterproof membrane keeps your feet dry while the Luxmotion technology keeps your feet happy and moving. Pros
- Super lightweight
- Features removable socks
Cons
- Removable socks are not waterproof
Plot twist: UGG makes rain shoes. While you may own a pair or two of their boots and probably Tasman clogs thanks to TikTok, this all-season pair allows you to splash in a puddle and trek through a drizzle. The tonal removable plush sock adds warmth and protection when needed, but can be taken out warmer days. Not to mention, I always find an added layer to be a stylish touch. They run small so size up. And while the removable socks add cozy warmth, they aren't meant to get wet so keep your puddle splashing light.

Pros
- Supportive footbed
- Adjustable straps make for easy wearing
Cons
- Straps take some time to dry after submerged
Everyone, and I mean everyone needs a pair of Teva sandals in her closet. It's a summertime staple that brings a world of comfort to stylish sandals with a cushioned footbed and proper arch support. Plus, the grippy traction makes them light-hike appropriate and water-shoe adjacent. I pair them with socks on chilly nights during camping trips, go commando for beachy bike rides, and even style them with a frilly day time dress. Tevas are are the most functional fashion statement around that can handle saltwater, rain, and mud. Go crazy with color combos because trust me, you'll never want to wear any other sandal.
Expect the adjustable straps to take a few hours to dry if completely submerged. Other than that, they are the perfect active sandal.

Pros
- Lightweight, and moves easily with you
Cons
- Traction could be stronger
- There is a break-in period
Birkenstock clogs are an icon of their own. They are the easiest slip on/slip off pair of shoes for errands, mail runs, dog walks, and more. But the classic suede isn't so weather friendly. This EVA pair is lighter in wight, sleeker in style, and can handle puddles, precipitation, slush, and drizzle. And for a fraction of the price, you can flex your Birk game without breaking the bank. With a water-friendly material combined with a flexible design, and the iconic contoured footbed, this is a pair to have on hand.
While they are a stylish choice, I've found they aren't made for quick movements on slippery surfaces leaving room for anti-slip improvement. And like any Birkenstock, they require a break-in period that molds to your footbed over time.

Cole Haan Greenwich Waterproof Bootie
Pros
- They don't appear to be waterproof (but are)
- Super comfortable
Cons
- Run slightly narrow
At first glance, you'd never think these Chelsea boots were waterproof, and that's the point. With thoughtful designs like a back D ring pull tab, stretchy side panels, and a sturdy traction, this waterproof leather—yes, leather, will keep your feet warm and dry without compromising a dressy outfit. I love how comfortable, lightweight, and minimally modern in design they are. They fit snug on your feet so if you run wide, size up.

Best Hiking Boots
Timberland GreenStride Motion 6 Waterproof Hiking Boot
Pros
- Extreme traction
- Great ankle support
Cons
- Some testers say they are a little heavy
Timberland knows how to make a good pair of boots, and the latest hiking footwear are sustainably made, waterproof, and super technical. Leather, recycled plastic, waterproof rubber creates the trifecta for a waterproof boot of luxurious comfort. This pair hits everything you could want in a pair of hiking shoes including a cushy insole, a fully-seamed seal, and TimberDry waterproof technology which are fancy patented words for waterproof comfort you can move easily in. Like any hardcore technical hiking boot however, they can be slightly bulky and heavy compared to sneakers.
Our Associate Fashion and Commerce Editor, Lily Wohlner took them for a spin on a long rainy hike in Joshua Tree. "While most of my body was soaking wet after the hike, my feet were completely warm and dry all thanks to these shoes," she said."They have incredible traction on slippery gravel and rocks—I never once felt like I could slip and fall while I was wearing these."
